What We're Watching: July 2011

Charm and whimsy.
Paris at Midnight by Woody Allen (2011) with Owen Wilson, Marion Cotillard and Rachel McAdams.

Never having seen a trailer for this movie, we let the strongly poositive reviews and promise of Paris lead us to the movie theater, best friend in tote. The result?
An unexpected yet pleasant surprise. The title evoked the thought of a romantic triste unfolding at midnight with Paris as the backdrop. The reality? A manifestation of childhood fantasies playing out in an adult world. Woody Allen creates an innocent fantasy world that those of us with an appreciation and love of turn of the century art and literature will be squealing with delight over.
The movie proves to be relaxing and light-hearted while managing to still have both a brain and a heart. This isn't a movie to go to if you're looking for a poignant new age take on cinema. However, if you're a lover of the classics and looking for an enjoyable 'back to the old ways' cinematic experience, look no further. Tell Fitzgerald and Hemmingway we said 'Hi!'.
